Diabetic Macular Oedema<\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n

Diabetic Macular Oedema (DMO)<\/h2>\n


What is this?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

DMO is a disorder involving the centre of the retina which is used for sharp vision. Blood vessels damaged by diabetes become \u2018leaky\u2019 and \u2018fluid\u2019 builds up around and in the retinal cells causing swelling in the retina. This does not always cause problems for vision but if it does, treatment is recommended.<\/p>\n

The risk of DMO increases with:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Length of time you have been diabetic.<\/li>\n
  2. Poorly controlled diabetes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. High blood pressure\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. High cholesterol\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Smoking\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Pregnancy\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It is very important to ensure that your diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol are as well controlled as possible and that you do not smoke. We will advise you to see your GP or diabetes specialist to check\u00a0all of\u00a0these factors.<\/p>\n

    <\/strong><\/p>\n

    Treatments\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

    In mild cases which are not affecting vision, we would advise monitoring closely and ensuring that all the factors discussed above are well controlled. In some\u00a0cases\u00a0for example of uncontrolled blood pressure, the DMO can resolve with improved control which may require different medication and life-style changes.<\/p>\n

    If vision is affected, there are different treatments we may suggest:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Retinal laser treatment \u2013 this can slow the leakage of fluid but may not improve vision. It is useful in some cases to stop vision from getting worse.<\/li>\n
    2. Eye injections\u00a0\u2013 this may involve\u00a0a number of\u00a0different drugs given by a quick injection.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
        \n
      • Avastin<\/li>\n
      • Eylea<\/li>\n
      • Lucentis<\/li>\n
      • Ozurdex<\/li>\n
      • Iluvien<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Laser treatment and injections may be used together in some cases.<\/p>\n
